What is meant, 'Rise, Peter; kill and eat'?

In this THINK ABOUT THIS… let’s talk about what is meant, ‘Rise, Peter; kill and eat’? Because there are a great number of people worldwide who were taught and believe that the apostle Peter, along with the other apostles, ate meats that were unclean according to the law which the LORD God gave to Moses. Let’s examine God’s living word concerning this subject.

Back in 2017 a Roman Catholic proudly announced to me ── rather anti-Semitically ── when he heard that I do not eat pork, “Oh, that’s a Jewish thing!”

I then proceeded to remind him of the LORD God’s food laws in Leviticus 11:1-8, 47, as well as Deuteronomy 14:1-29. But, since a large majority of Catholics don’t read the Old Testament (and I’m sure this doesn’t apply to all Catholics), it’s possible he was referencing Acts 10 ── especially that part concerning the apostle Peter’s vision.

There was a centurion, a commander in the Italian Regiment of the Roman military. He lived in Caesarea. His name was Cornelius. It was in Cornelius’ home that the LORD God opened up the door to His living word to the Gentiles. In a vision, he was told to send to Joppa for the apostle Peter, who would tell him what to do. And, as Cornelius’ messengers were on their way to get Peter, Peter also had a vision. While Peter was on the roof of his house praying he became very hungry and wanted to eat; “but while they made ready, he fell into a trance.” He saw the atmosphere open and an object like a great sheet bound at the four corners that descended down to him. Within the bounded sheet were all kinds of four-footed beasts, creeping things, and birds of the air. Then, a voice came to him, ‘Rise, Peter; kill and eat.’ ── Acts 10:1-13.

Was this the instance that my mother-in-law’s neighbor was referring to in which the apostle Peter was supposedly now allowed to eat pork?

But, did he?

Notice the apostle Peter’s response to the voice ──

“ …’ Not so, Lord! For I have never eaten anything common or unclean!’” vs. 14.

So, if our Lord Jesus Christ had made unclean meats clean, the apostle Peter would have not only begun eating any meats deemed unclean by the law of God, but ── and pay close attention to his answer, he had not eaten even up to that point any meats deemed unclean by the law of God!

Also, the apostle Peter was told by a voice THREE TIMES, ‘What God has cleansed you must not call common.’ – vs. 15. He was instructed about what the LORD God has since cleansed, he was not to think of it as common. Here, there was no reference as to what was considered common and what was unclean.

The apostle Peter “wondered within himself what this vision which he had seen meant,” since he knew and believed that God’s living word plainly FORBIDS His begotten children to consume meats that are deemed unclean. Because God’s living and immutable word nowhere contradicts itself. While he pondered the meaning of this vision, ‘the men who had been sent from Cornelius stood before the gate.’ Then the Spirit of God came to him and said, “Behold, THREE men are seeking you. Arise therefore, go down and go with them, doubting nothing; for I have sent them.” – vss. 19-20.

Peter’s Vision Made Clear

The following day the apostle Peter traveled with the three men, and some brethren from Joppa to Caesarea to meet with Cornelius. As he talked with him, “he went in and found many who had come together.” And he said, “You know how unlawful it is for a Jewish man to keep company with or go to one of another nation. But God has shown me that I should not call any man common or unclean.” – vs. 28.

The LORD God had never forbidden Jews to keep company with or go to one of another nation ── that was a man-made law by the Jews based upon their wrong understanding of God’s living word! Truly, until that time the apostle Peter was wrongly following Jewish traditions and customs. Do you recall the apostle Paul getting onto Peter concerning this very thing? Paul confronts Peter concerning his hypocrisy. “for before certain men came from James, he would eat with the Gentiles; but when they came, he withdrew and separated himself.” – Galatians 2:11-14; in approx. AD 45.

But, NOWHERE in God’s living word, do we find that the apostle Peter ate pig meat or any other meat deemed unclean by the law of God. A great number of people are wrong, though I doubt many would admit it even if it is proven to them beyond a shadow of a doubt.

Has Our Lord Jesus Cleansed All Meats?

Still, again, multiple millions are taught and believe that God’s law concerning clean and unclean meats has been “done away with.”

Our Lord Jesus’ living words in Mark chapter 7 have been purported to have “done away” with His law concerning unclean meats ──

“When He had entered a house away from the crowd, His disciples asked Him concerning the parable. 18) So He said to them, ‘Are you thus without understanding also? Do you not perceive that whatever enters a man from outside cannot defile him, 19) because it does not enter his heart but his stomach, and is eliminated, thus purifying all foods?’” – Mark 7:17-19 (New King James Version).

Now, something to think about ── if our Lord Jesus truly meant by this clear understanding: What had He just been discussing with the Pharisees and scribes? “’ Why do Your disciples not walk according to the TRADITION OF THE ELDERS, but eat bread with unwashed hands?’” And our Lord Jesus answered ── it doesn’t matter if you eat with unwashed hands, because what you eat doesn’t enter into your heart, but enters into your stomach, which eventually is eliminated – thus, whatever was unclean on your food has now been “purified” ── that all meats that were unclean are now clean (of which, sadly, multiple millions believe), then obviously the apostle Peter still didn’t understand our Lord Jesus’ clear teaching years later!

Let us briefly go over a little about the law concerning clean and unclean meats. (We have several articles concerning this important subject, i.e. “Is God's Biblical Food Laws Still In Effect!?” and “An Abomination to Eat Pork!”). This law was well-known even before the Great Flood. A verse that a great many children’s Bible Story books actually won’t properly quote ── “’ You shall take with you SEVEN each of every clean animal, a male and his female; two each of animals that are unclean, a male and his female.’” – Genesis 7:2.

When it becomes clear to you just who the “LORD” of the Old Testament was, you will come to see that this subject is so much more important in receiving the glorious gift of eternal salvation than you might think it is. Truly, SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT… Because throughout God’s living word is made clear that the One who later became our Savior Jesus Christ was the very same being known as the “LORD” in the Old Testament. For reference be sure to read and study Colossians 1:13-18; as well as John 1:1-5. The very God who would later become “flesh and dwell among us” – John 1:14.

The Word had personally said to the children of Israel, “’ distinguish between the unclean and the clean, and between the animal that may be eaten and the animal that may not be eaten.’” – Leviticus 11:47.

Have you ever asked yourself ── “Why did the LORD God make such a law?”

Well, our Creator always has a good reason for the things that He does. When one comes to the knowledge that all unclean meats can have dangerous bacteria, that can cause foodborne illnesses, then there’s our answer. The LORD God says to us, “’ But if you do not obey Me, and do not observe all these commandments, and if you despise My statutes, … I will even appoint terror over you, wasting disease [such as a cancer] and fever which shall consume the eyes and cause sorrow of heart.’” – Leviticus 26:14, 15, 16. The Eternal our God’s living word makes clear which animals are clean ── “’ Among the animals, whatever divides the hoof, having cloven hooves and chewing the cud ── that you may eat.’” – Leviticus 11.

All the meats that were deemed by the LORD God as unclean are still unclean in this 21st century! They all can still have dangerous bacteria, which can cause foodborne illnesses in human beings.

Can We Eat Whatever Is Set Before Us?

Yet another passage in God’s living word that is often misunderstood and misconstrued, and is taught and believed “done away” or “nailed to the cross” with God’s law against consuming unclean meats is 1st Corinthians chapter 10 ──

“Eat whatever is sold in the meat market, asking no questions for conscience sake.” vs. 25.

Here again, one must properly understand what is being talked about ── we must include the whole context and not just one verse.

What was it that he was speaking about?

“Observe Israel after the flesh: Are not those who eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar? 19) What am I saying then? That an idol is anything, or what is offered to idols is anything? 20) RATHER, that the things which the Gentiles [or heathen; Someone who is not religious] sacrifice they sacrifice to demons and not to God, and I do not want you to have fellowship with demons. 21) You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; …” – 1 Corinthians 10:18-21.

He goes on to say that people will tell themselves, “All things are lawful for me.” And he answers, ‘but not all things are helpful, and not all things edify’ the person.

In verse 27 he says, “If any of those who do not believe invites you to dinner, and you desire to go, eat whatever is set before you, asking no questions for conscience sake.”

Does the apostle Paul mean that you cannot ask questions about how the meats were prepared, or its source? No. Logically one would ── not everyone can eat the same foods. As noted earlier, the whole context should make it clear what the apostle Paul was actually speaking of ── he was addressing people offering animal meats as sacrifices to other gods. The apostle Paul had a clear understanding of God’s food law.

As an example: If your host is a practicing Islamic, and he and his family pray over the meal being served, then, for their consciences' sake, you should not eat it ── notice verses 28 & 29.

Understand, the god they worship, Allah, is not the Creator God that true Christians worship in truth and in Spirit!

Is All Meats Now Considered Clean?

Another so often misunderstood and misconstrued passage is Romans 14:14.

“I know and am convinced by the Lord Jesus that there is nothing unclean of itself; …”

What is he talking about?

Again, we must include the whole context to see what it is that the apostle Paul is addressing. Notice that this chapter's subject is mentioned in verse 2 – “ … one man will have faith enough to eat all kinds of food, while a weaker man eats only vegetables.” – (New English Bible). In other words, some people ate meat and vegetables, while others ate only vegetables. The apostle Paul in this chapter is saying that true Christians should not judge another if they only eat vegetables ── are a vegetarian. Rather, a true Christian should not say or do anything that would cause another true Christian to stumble in faith ── it is good neither to eat meat nor drink wine nor do anything by which your brother stumbles or is offended or is made weak.” – vs. 21.

So, now that we properly understand what he is speaking about ── what about verse 14?

We see the answer when we discover the original Greek word for “unclean.”

The word in Greek is koinos, meaning common #2839. It is usually translated into English as “unclean.”

The Interlinear Bible Hebrew/Greek/English Bible translates this verse – “I know and am persuaded in the Lord Jesus that nothing by itself is common, except to the one counting anything to be common, it is common.”

Note that the Greek word for “unclean” is not used ── akathartos #169.

Sadly, the improper translation from Koine Greek to English in this verse has caused a great many people to wrongly conclude that this statement by the apostle Paul permits all Christians to eat meats that even the LORD God has deemed unclean. □

Our Top Ten Articles of 2024

Greetings, our brethren, friends, and co-workers: In Four Oaks and Fayetteville, North Carolina; Beijing, China; Delta, British Columbia, Canada; and all around the world! Welcome! The Church of Jesus Christ Online Ministries is pleased to present our top ten articles of 2024!

1) Commentary: Does Your Appearance Count? Part II

How important is your appearance? Is the LORD God concerned about how you dress and how you appear? Can you be spiritually clean and yet at the same time be physically unclean?

King Solomon, who was blessed with immense wisdom from the LORD God instructs us, “Above all GUARD THE DOOR OF YOUR MIND with diligence, for out of it are the issues of life.” – Proverbs 4:23, NET.

Now, in this Personal, I’m going to speak with thunder. The Lord GOD Himself speaks His living word as “the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” – Ephesians 6:17. All true Christians are advised in His word to take up this “sword,” as part of the whole armor of God ── to rebuke and withstand in the evil day.

In 2015 I had a dream in the night in my head while on my bed, and behold, I saw a young Jewish family on a bright beautiful morning, in which all the males wore yarmulkes, taking pictures. Then as I lifted my eyes I saw a huge armada of spaceships in low earth orbit in which one very tall commander dressed in silver armor with six huge horns that wrapped around from the back of his head, his face shining like the sun in full strength, stood atop one of the ships looking through a pair of binoculars at the earth.

I feel the Spirit of God would like me to announce:

The majority of people view it as a Roman Catholic holiday, while many others look at it as an Irish holiday. But for most, it has become a major drinking holiday!

What is “sanctification by the Spirit”?

Sadly, the common belief and teaching in this present evil age is that a person who is “sanctified” is spiritually perfect ─ that they are incapable of sinning! But, this is not the true meaning of “sanctification.”

In the Book of Revelation, with the Apostle John’s vision of our Lord Jesus Christ, are a series of seven short letters written to SEVEN churches in Asia Minor, corresponding with modern-day Turkey – Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamos, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea.

YouTube (owned by Google) approved and then a couple days later "disapproved" our sermon "'Blow the Trumpet!'" which was being promoted in the United States and Israel for "violating" their policy-sensitive categories, like religious beliefs!

Dear Friends, Brethren, and Co-Workers around the world in Christ Jesus:

Greetings from West Central Florida.

World In Review──2024

by Guy LaMar

Here are a few interesting percentage polls within the United States of America and around the world.

The estimated population of the United States is about 342 Million people.

In 2022, an estimated 47.9 million people self-identified as Black, making up 14.4% of the country’s population. 1 In 2023, about 65.22 million people of Hispanic origin were living in the U.S., which has steadily increased in the last decades. 2 More than 24 million Asian Americans lived in the United States as of 2022, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau. They accounted for 7% of the nation’s population that year and are the fastest-growing major racial or ethnic group in the country. 3 75.3% are white people. 1.3% are American Indian and Alaska Native. The population of Arab Americans in the United States is nearly 3.5 million. 5 Michigan has the highest number and percentage of Arab Americans at 2.1%, respectively. 6 As of 2023, there were more than 2.9 million Indian immigrants residing in the United States, making it the second most popular global destination for Indians after the United Arab Emirates. 7

The majority of the U.S. black population lives in the South. 8

Top 5 U.S. states by share of total U.S. Hispanic population in 2021: California 25%, Texas 19%, Florida 9%, New York 6%, and Arizona 4%. 9

As of 2020, the share of the total population ages 65 and older is largest in Maine, Florida, West Virginia, and Vermont. Over 20% of the population in these states is elderly. The first members of the baby boom generation, or the group of people born between 1946 and 1964, turned 65 in 2011.

The state of California has the highest percentage of Hispanic people at 39.4 million. 10

The Asian American population has increased in every state and the District of Columbia over the past two decades. California had an Asian population of roughly 5.9 million in 2019, by far the nation’s largest. 11

When it comes to states of residence, Texas is home to the largest Black population, at about 4.2 million. 12

In a recent survey conducted among Americans, 7.2% of respondents identified themselves as part of the LGBT community. In 2001, 53% of respondents stated they believed gay or lesbian relations to be morally wrong, but in 2022 this number had fallen to 25%. Americans that believe same-sex couples should be recognized by law──71%. Attitudes towards homosexuality vary by region or country, though global trends generally suggest that acceptance of homosexuality is increasing. Overall, acceptance of the LGBT community is highest in Europe, Argentina, and Canada, where more than 70 percent of the public declared that support same-sex marriage by society, with the Netherlands heading the ranking. Moreover, surveys suggest that women were more likely to identify as LGBT than men. 13

However, in 2019, Colin Poitras of the Yale School of Medicine wrote, “an estimated 83% … who identify as lesbian, gay or bisexual — keep their orientation hidden from all or most of the people in their lives. … The study found that concealment is highest in certain African and Middle Eastern countries and lowest in Western Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand.” 14 A 2017 SAGE Journals article by Amin Ghaziani places gays and lesbians in America at 23%, and that 37% of the LGB population are in the closet. 15

Of course, it is the left-wing liberals who are promoting this Queer Agenda!

In the United States of America ──there are 165.28 million males and 168 million females. 16

According to a Gallup survey in 2023 about 67% is Christians in the U.S. 17 Islam is the third-largest religion in the United States (1.34%). 2.4% are Jewish. 18

In a 2019 Lifeway Research survey conducted of 1,010 American churchgoers, only 5% take a Sabbath rest on Saturday. 19

Truly, only the LORD God knows ── of the population of the United States of America ── who are to be called a true Christian. In other words – those who are led by the Spirit of God, and are considered children of God – cf. Romans 8:14-15. Those who have been properly baptized have hands laid upon them, have received the gift of the Holy Spirit, are faithful and obedient to the Law of God, and those who properly keep the holy Sabbath and the Holy Days.

According to a 2022 survey, 31% of Americans never attend church or synagogue, compared to 20% of Americans who attend every week. 20

Top three countries with the Highest Murder Rates (per 100k people) in 2022:

● Jamaica ──53.34
● Saint Vincent and the Grenadines ──40.41
● Trinidad and Tobago ──39.52

The United States of America had a murder rate of 6.38 (per 100k people) in 2022. However, it did have a high share of global homicides at 19.07%! 21

Mississippi’s homicide rate — the highest in the nation — is more than 11 times New Hampshire’s — the nation’s lowest. Age-adjusted homicide rate per 100,000 people in 2022 ── Mississippi 20.7%, Louisiana 19.8%, Alabama 14.9%, and New Mexico 14.5%. Although Washington, D.C., had a higher age-adjusted homicide rate (23.7 homicide deaths per 100,000 people) than every state, the national capital is entirely urban, and it’s more appropriate to compare it to counties in major metropolitan areas. Among those, Washington, D.C., had the eighth-highest crude homicide death rate. 22

According to far-left-leaning CNN, there were an average of 98,990 abortions each month in the first three months of 2024. That’s about 14% higher than the average from the same period last year, or about 12,000 more abortions each month. 23 There were more than 1 million abortions in the US in 2023, the highest rate in more than a decade and a 10% jump from 2020, according to a report released … by the Guttmacher Institute. 24 Conservatively, since the Roe v. Wade decision in 1973, there have been roughly 60 million abortions! – according to the biased and far left-leaning Fact Check! 25 A recent report indicates that the number of women getting abortions in the United States has increased since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. 26

The United States of America has a national debt of $36.3 TRILLION as of the writing of this article. 27

In 2023, there were 720,652 full-time law enforcement officers employed in the United States, an increase from 708,001 the previous year. 28 And, according to two sources, in 2020, federal law enforcement agencies in the United States employed almost 137,000 full-time federal law enforcement officers who were authorized to make arrests, carry firearms, or both. 29

As of September 2023, the US military consisted of 2.86 million people worldwide. The US military's strength of 2.86 million troops is slightly greater than the population of Chicago, Illinois, the country's third-largest city. Of those military members, the Department of Defense (DOD) listed nearly 1.29 million people as active-duty troops, and 767,238 as national guard/reserves. 30

Top Three Countries with the Highest Number of Active-Duty Military Personnel (in members):

● China ──2,185,000 (Reserve 1,170,000)
● India ──1,455,550 (Reserve 1,155,000)
● United States ──1,328,000 (Reserve 744, 950) 31

According to Mitchell Crow of Geographic FAQ, the United States of America has the most advanced military technology in the world. However, Russia, China, France, and the United Kingdom are also countries with advanced military technology. 32

Currently, about 13,080 nuclear warheads exist worldwide, with Russia holding the most (6,257) and the U.S. following (5,550). 33 For the longest the United States of America led the nuclear bomb race. But in recent years Russia won over the United States in the nuclear arms race. Regardless of how many each nation has it wouldn't take but a few to destroy the entire Earth.

There are over 210 million registered voters in the United States. The number of registered voters for the Republican Party is approximately 38.8 million. The Democratic voters have historically held an edge over Republican voters, and recent data shows that this data is still holding true. The number of Democratic voters is reported to be around 49 million. 34 This, of course, does not reflect this last U.S. Presidential election! From what happened in the last election it appears that there are more Republicans than there are Democrats.

Around the world, teetotalism is extremely popular. Teetotalism, or complete abstinence from alcoholic beverages, is a common practice around the world.

● Libya ──99.5%
● Afghanistan ──99.1%
● Iran ──96%

Interestingly, out of 187 countries studied in 2023, the United States of America comes in at 9.2%! 35

Of WORLD RELIGIONS:

● Christianity, with about 2.38 billion followers, is the world's largest religion, deeply diversified into numerous denominations like Catholicism, Protestantism, and Eastern Orthodoxy.
● Islam, followed by over 1.91 billion people, is the second-largest religion and is expected to nearly match Christianity's following by 2050.
● A significant number of people, nearly 1.2 billion worldwide, are unaffiliated with any religion or hold Atheist beliefs, especially in China and Japan.
● Hinduism - 1.16 billion
● Buddhism - 507 million
● Folk Religions - 430 million
● Judaism - 14.6 million 36

There are an estimated 1.2 billion Roman Catholics in the world. The Roman Catholic Church is the largest so-called “Christian” organization in the world! 37

There are hundreds of offshoots and splinter groups from the Church of God (i.e. Worldwide Church of God and the different incarnations of it) therefore, it is impossible to list, or keep track of, all of them. Of the major church groups ── those with the largest claimed members ── here are but a few:

● The Christian Biblical Church of God.
● The Living Church of God.
● The United Church of God.
● The Church of God International.
● The Intercontinental Church of God.
● Church of God (A Worldwide Association)
● The Church of God (International Ministries)
● Church of God Ministries.

Two other major groups claim to have large membership that I WILL NOT MENTION. Because they are very much based upon their leader other than our Leader and Lord Jesus Christ. Sadly, their fruits are rotten ── blind leading the blind (Matthew 15:14). Although they have money to spend, they allow their church leaders to be the main focus. Which is extremely dangerous and blasphemous. The members of those organizations appear to do whatever their “guru” leader tells them to do.

Many small church groups in the United States of America are doing their part in God’s living work faithfully. And many of them are having a growth spurt! Many INTERNET GROUPS are also doing their part in the living work of God. Such as the Church of Jesus Christ Online Ministries. As for The Independent Christian Church of God, the hope is to have a growth spurt within the next 12 months ──God willing. Our goal is to invest money into the effort of obtaining a church building to help this quest. □

2 Corinthians 6:14

"Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness?" ─ 2 Corinthians 6:14.

There are many who are teaching that 2 Corinthians 6:14 means that we are to avoid any unbelievers.

I tried to correct a female preacher on this misunderstanding and was instead only tongue-lashed by her commenting back rather insolently──
“Then how do u explain the scripture i quoted? And yes we cant exactly avoid evil doers and unbelievers...ofcourse not...”
Yet, that isn’t what she initially said. She emphatically wrote, “have very little (or nothing) to do with evildoers and unbelievers.”

She then quoted Proverbs 13:20, 21 connecting it directly with 2 Corinthians 6:14.

This is not what our Lord Jesus Christ asked Father. In other words, our Lord Jesus Christ doesn’t want us to avoid per se unbelievers, or have nothing to do with evildoers – because we can’t.

He asked Father, ’ I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one.’ - John 17:15. We cannot just magically have nothing to do with unbelievers or those that do evil. Under divine inspiration, the apostle Paul wrote, “Yet, I certainly did not mean with sexually immoral people of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world.” - 1 Corinthians 5:10. We cannot just avoid those that do not have our faith, but we should be as our Lord Jesus asks of us, to be that light that so shines before men, that they may see our good works and glorify the LORD God!

And this is where I wish to focus. Let’s look at this term ‘unequally yoked together with unbelievers.’ How is that possible!? How are we (and I italicize we, because I am speaking of us, brethren) to avoid being unequally yoked with unbelievers!? Is the apostle Paul saying here that we are to not have any contact with unbelievers!? What about my wife!? She is an unbeliever. How are we going to make it through this life if we have to avoid unbelievers?

Are we to be like a commune? – like the Essenes of the 1st century? The Essenes went out into the wilderness throughout Roman Judea and dedicated themselves to voluntary poverty, daily immersion, and asceticism. Or, a more modern commune – such as the Amish or even the Mennonites – which practices complete abstention from society as a whole? Is this what we’re supposed to practice? Now, in his preface, Fred R. Coulter who put together a faithful version of the Holy Bible with commentary – I absolutely love this Bible which I received from someone I love dearly – says, “A secular humanist worldview has emerged over the past fifty years, gradually eroding the knowledge of the true God. As a result, a form of “Christianity without God” has developed.”

And what I have taken note of is that this female preacher claims to be “following the teachings of Jesus Christ.” But her true leader is Herbert W. Armstrong ── who again they claim was “RAISED UP in the strength and power of the prophet ELIJAH.” These followers and “worshipers” of Herbert W. Armstrong continue to twist the Scriptures based on this one man’s philosophy of the Bible.

Have you ever heard someone say, “You can prove anything from the Bible”? Well, that statement is true – and false. It’s true if only isolated passages are used. But it is utterly false if the whole divine revelation is in view. In other words – if you take the entirety of the Bible and you look at all the references for your specific idea, then you will find out that what you thought was true was absolutely false. Sadly, what many are doing is designing their teachings so that the Bible says what they want it to say ── not what the LORD God says in His totality.

So, what does it mean to be ‘unequally yoked’!? Well, what does this word ‘yoked’ bring to your mind? Well, for me it makes me think of a yoke of oxen. A yoke of bondage – like we read in the Book of Exodus when the children of Israel were under bondage. Traveling through Ohio, I’ve seen oxen yoked together. Very early God instructed His people to be separate. A true Christian, a follower of Jesus Christ, is not to be that closely related to an unbeliever. And I’ll explain this.

First, let’s address my wife. Turn with me if you will to 1st Corinthians 7 ──

Beginning in verse 10 – “Now to the married I command, yet not I but the Lord: A wife is not to depart from her husband [in other words, separate]. 11) But even if she does depart, let her remain unmarried or be reconciled to her husband. And a husband is not to divorce his wife.”

Minister Guy C LaMar has an enlightening God-inspired booklet entitled
“Marriage” that is worth reading – be sure to read this 9-page booklet today!

But, notice that the apostle Paul – inspired by the glorious Holy Spirit – says that it is alright for them to be married. Notice the next few verses──

“But to the rest I, not the Lord, say: If any brother has a wife who does not believe, and she is willing to live with him, let him not divorce her. 13) And a woman who has a husband who does not believe, if he is willing to live with her, let her not divorce him. 14) For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband; otherwise your children would be unclean, but now they are holy.”

I gave a THINK ABOUT THIS not long ago ── What Is Sanctification by the Spirit?

So, the LORD God’s protection is around the whole family.

Verse 15 – “But if the unbeliever departs, let him depart; a brother or a sister is not under bondage in such cases. But God has called us to peace.”

And, certainly, neither are friends or associates. We are not under any bondage, brethren, to our unbelieving friends or associates.

So, a believer can be married to an unbeliever and still be – in the eyes of the LORD God – a holy person and be under God’s protection. To be ‘unequally yoked’ with an unbeliever is like the idea of ‘can two walk together, unless they are agreed?’ – Amos 3:3. We are not to have social or religious FELLOWSHIP – in other words, close friendship – with any except those who know and OBEY the TRUTH of God. We must try to WORSHIP with them.

Let’s turn again to 2nd Corinthians 6.

The apostle Paul continues here in verse 14 – “Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness?” – here he’s making a comparison.

Verse 15 – “And what accord has Christ with Belial? …” – or rather, Satan the devil. What association is there between the two?

“ … Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever? 16) And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said: ‘I will dwell in them And walk among them. I will be their God, And they shall be My people.’

He’s sort of asking the question here – how can these two opposites coexist and yet the true Christian remain holy!?

In 1st Corinthians 5:9, we read concerning an incestuous relationship that was taking place within the Church there in Corinth. Immediately, the Spirit of God reminds me of the announcement we gave this past October. It involves an “incestuous relationship” of an individual, either real or imagined in this person’s mind ── and the main reason for our unaffiliating with that church.

“I wrote to you in my epistle not to keep company with sexually immoral people. 10) Yet I certainly did not mean with the sexually immoral people of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world.”

And let us take special note of the following verse ──

“But now I have written to you not to keep company with anyone named a brother, who is sexually immoral, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or an extortioner ── not even to eat with such a person.” – 1 Corinthians 5:9-11.

He went on to say in chapter 6, verse 6 – “But brother [speaking of brethren in Christ] goes to law against brother, and that before unbelievers!” Why? Because “those who are outside God judges. Therefore ‘put away from yourselves the evil person.’”

The apostle Paul knew that this had to be dealt with immediately. But, was this “putting away” permanent?

It is evidence – later on – that Paul wrote to them and said, ‘you ought rather to forgive and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one be swallowed up with too much sorrow.’ If he repents he should be allowed back. And, that was the apostle Paul’s heart – and I believe it was a wonderful example of how he dealt with this. □

Kiss vs. Handshake

by Guy C LaMar

THINK ABOUT THIS… The word kiss vs. handshake in Hebrew.

In Hebrew, the word “kiss” is nāšaq (Strong’s Concordance #5401), and it means ── to kiss, to be equipped.

According to the Theological Wordbook of the Old Testament ── it means “kiss.” A derivative is ne shîqâ, meaning kiss, as in Song 1:2; Prov. 27:6.
“As for the verb, it is best to deal with the most restricted use first. The concept of “touch” occurs where, in Ezk. 3:13, the prophet describes the touching (“kissing”) of the wings of living creatures in his vision, quite evidently the cherubim whose wings touched as they stood under the platform on which rested the throne of God.

The kiss was a very common convention in the ancient Near East, yet always of special significance. Kisses are given, for example, to the father, the mother, the son, the brother, the wife, the father or mother-in-law, wives of one’s sons as well as a lover (Song 8:1; Prov. 7:13). …

Along with a kiss of affection, there was a kiss of respect: Worthy of particular note are Samuel’s kissing of Saul upon anointing him (1 Sam. 10:1) and David’s farewell to a loyal subject as he returned from his brief exile across Jordan (2 Sam. 19:39.”
Also, nāshaq, means “handle, be equipped with (e.g. 1 Chr. 12:2; 2 Chr. 17:17), exact meaning is uncertain.

A derivative of this word is nesheq, which means equipment, or weapons (e.g. Ezk. 39:9; Job 20:24).

So, the word and its derivatives literally or figuratively means touch, as in a mode of attachment, to equip with weapons, as in arming soldiers, to rule, kiss, and touch.

What about the word kiss in the Greek language?

In Greek, it’s phileō (Strong’s Concordance #5368), and it means ── to love, to have affection, and regard of a very high order.

According to the Vine’s Expository Dictionary of Old and New Testament Words ── φιλέω means to love, signifies to kiss, in Matt. 26:48; Mark 14:44; Luke 22:47.

Truly, the kiss with which, as a sign of fraternal affection. True Christians were accustomed to welcoming or dismissing their companions in faith. Fraternal affection is a deep bond of affection between people, often family members that comes from long familiarity. It can also describe the strong friendship between two people or groups of people.

Next: What about the words saint vs. holy.

In the Hebrew language the word “saint” is qādôš (Strong’s Concordance #6918), and it means ── holy, sacred, consecrated, set apart as dedicated to God.

According to the Theological Wordbook of the Old Testament ── it means “holy, Holy One, saint.”
“The verb qādash in the Qal connotes [the conjugation or binyan in which most verbs in Hebrew dictionaries appear] the state of that which belongs to the sphere of the sacred. Thus it is distinct from the common or profane. In the Piel [according to the Gesenius Hebrew Grammar (Gesenius), “the fundamental idea of Piel, to which all the various shades of meaning in this conjugation may be referred, is to busy oneself eagerly with the action indicated by the stem”] and Hiphil [a verbal stem formation in Biblical Hebrew] connotes the act by which the distinction is effected. It is a denominative verb.”
The LORD God’s holy people are known as saints – obedient spiritually begotten people who serve the LORD God with absolute faith and dedication.

What about the word holy?

In the Hebrew language the word “holy” is qādôš (Strong’s Concordance #6918), and it means ── holy, sacred, consecrated, set apart as dedicated to God.

The words “saint” and “holy” have the same meanings.

Again from the Theological Wordbook of the Old Testament ──
“The word occurs in several dialects of Akkadian with the basic meanings “to be clean, pure, consecrated.” In the Canaanite texts from Ugarit, the basic meaning of the word group is “holy,” and it is always used in a cultic sense. A definitive use of the term occurs in Num. 16:38.”
To be physically pure, which is to be clean, obedient to the LORD God’s dietary laws, morally blameless, of good character, religiously well kept, ceremonially consecrated, dedicated, loyal, committed to keeping the LAW OF GOD ──which is the Way of God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ showed to us by His example in how we are to conduct ourselves in serving the LORD God correctly.

Simply put, it means “pure.” A pure people, a pure act, a pure manner, a pure Way.

So, we see in the living word of God ── the Holy Bible ── a “holy kiss” is a mindset of a welcoming manner of an inviting characteristic to all brethren.

To show that happy greeting of an old friend who has come back around after a long absence – that upbeat and joyous attitude of greeting. A very happy and glad emotion to see someone.

We see a gentle touch as a welcoming touch.

Now, it does not have to be upon the lips.

Again, the Theological Wordbook of the Old Testament ──
“’ Mouth’ does often indicate the actual commands or orders in biblical Hebrew. We can also view Ps. 2:12 in this light and thereby reject the conjectural emendation involved in the RSV translation, “with trembling kiss his feet.” Also the command to “kiss the son” may be understood to mean to “kiss the feet of the son” being derived from the custom of kissing the king’s feet as an act of homage, “a custom which is well known to us from Babylonian and Egyptian documents” (Artur Weiser, The Psalms, Westminster, 1962, p. 115).”
It may be with a kind of handshake, hug, or the traditional “kissing the feet” ──though the “kissing of the feet” in public or in a group might be awkward in Western culture. It’s really about making physical contact when greeting others ── especially our brethren. □

What Is Sin?

In this THINK ABOUT THIS… let’s talk about sin. What is sin?

Now, certainly, we could write up a whole booklet on this one subject of── sin.

The LORD our God’s living and immutable word says that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” – Romans 3:23.

But, what is the definition of sin according to the LORD our God?

This world believes that sin is: “thinking thoughts you ought not to be thinking about thoughts you ought not to be thinking about things you ought not to be doing while you are thinking the kind of thoughts.” Certainly a word salad straight from Kamala Harris!

Well, it’s not far from the truth── but still, no cigar.

The LORD our God’s definition of sin is──

“Whoever commits sin also commits LAWLESSNESS, and sin is LAWLESSNESS.” – 1 John 3:4.

It is a violation of the TEN COMMANDMENTS!

Now, nearly everyone on planet Earth knows, or has heard of the Ten Commandments! Right!? Let’s go over them──

1) “’ You shall have no other gods before Me.’”
2) “’ You shall not make for yourself a carved image── …’”
3) “’ You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, …’”
4) “’ Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.’”
5) “’ Honor your father and your mother, …’”
6) “’ You shall not murder.’”
7) “’ You shall not commit adultery.’”
8) “’ You shall not steal.’”
9) “’ You shall not bear false witness …’”
10) “’ You shall not covet …’”

Also known as THE LAW OF LOVE!

Our Lord Jesus Christ has said, “ …’ Hear Me everyone, and understand: 15) There is nothing that enters a man from outside which can defile him; but the things which come out of him, THOSE are the things that defile a man. 16) If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear!’ – Mark 7:14-16.

What did He mean!? His disciples asked Him concerning this parable.

“ …’ Do you not perceive that WHATEVER enters a man from outside CANNOT defile him, 19) because it does not enter his heart but his stomach, and is eliminated, thus purifying all foods?’ – vs. 17-19.

Sadly, many Bible critics cite Mark 7:1-15 as a license from our Lord Jesus the Christ (Christ being His title) that all meats are allowed to be eaten. Did our Lord Jesus do away with the prohibition of unclean meats!? Did He say that He had “purged all meats”? The children of Israel’s dietary law was well known by the Jews in the time of Jesus. The self-righteous Pharisees criticized Jesus’ disciples for eating bread without first washing their hands – vs. 2. Our Lord Jesus’ response was to severely reprimand those self-righteous Pharisees for their rejection of God’s Commandments – vs. 6-13. He then summoned the crowd to hear what He was about to say (vs. 14). He told them that whatever goes into a man (into mankind) from the outside cannot defile the man, but what comes out of a man can (vs. 15-23). Now, many read verse 19 and conclude that a person can eat any kind of meat because our Lord Jesus has “purged all meats.” Sadly, most people neither carefully study and read verse 19, or they read past it – and thereby completely miss the entire point of Jesus’ instruction! Even our Lord Jesus’ own disciples did not immediately understand His teaching – vs. 18. The apostle Matthew’s account shows that apostle Peter asked Him to explain it – Matthew 15:15. Our Lord Jesus clearly was emphasizing that it is the evil things which come out of people – from within, out of the mouth and heart – that defiles a man. He went on to explain that to eat with unwashed hands does not spiritually defile anyone (Matthew 15:20; Mark 7:20-23). This entire account was written to address the futility of the Pharisees’ elaborate handwashing before meals! Privately He explained this parable to His disciples, He gave a frank description of the human body’s normal elimination of any accidentally ingested dirt. He said that such dirt “goes out into the draught” – in other words, the sewer. There was NEVER any Old Testament command to avoid eating food with dirty hands! Our Lord Jesus used this occasion to condemn a man-made tradition that had been elevated above the importance of getting rid of evil and rotten attitudes and thoughts that are INSIDE all human beings – thus defiling them! Notice that in Luke 11:38, the Pharisee was astonished that our Lord Jesus sat down to dine without first washing His hands. Our Lord showed that it is much more important to control what words come out of your mouth, and what thoughts come out of your mind than to worry about dirty hands – Mark 7:20-23.

“ …’ What comes out of a man, that defiles a man. 21) For from within, OUT OF THE HEART OF MEN, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, 22) thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness. 23) All these evil things come from within and defile a man.’ – Mark 7:20-23.

So, it’s the breaking of the TEN COMMANDMENTS!

And, what man── as well as what true brother or sister── has not time and time again struggled against committing sin as described by the apostle Paul!?

“For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice. 20) Now if I do what I will not to do, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me.” – Romans 7:19-20.

All of us── at times── have lost this struggle.

Now, no man or woman can live ABOVE not ever sinning against the LORD God. The Lord our God says──

“ … ‘With men it is impossible, but not with God, for with God all things are possible.’ – Mark 10:27.

Our beloved apostle Paul continued that our ONLY DELIVERANCE from this “body of death” is through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ – Romans 8. CHRIST IN YOU!

“that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do NOT walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.” – Romans 8:4.

But, the Spirit is not going to do it for us──we must do our part! And, like our Lord Jesus has said, it all has to do with our HEART.

Repentance. To repent of sin literally means to change one’s heart and mind in respect to the breaking of God’s Commandments, and accepting our Lord Jesus as Savior. For us to be “renewed in the Spirit of your mind, 24) and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.” – Ephesians 4:23-24.

Again, CHRIST IN YOU!

The apostle James (a brother to our Lord Jesus) explains to us exactly how sin occurs──

“But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. 15) Then, when desire [the desire WITHIN THE HEART] has CONCEIVED, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth DEATH.” – James 1:14-15.

You are TEMPTED IN YOUR MIND. When you think about something that tempts you── and you allow your mind to dwell upon it── either a desire to go somewhere, to do something, or to have something you know that is WRONG── the thinking about it finally CONCEIVES (it leads to action), and then GIVES BIRTH (you sin).

Truly, if you continue thinking about it, after a while you can’t resist it.

How do you prevent sinning!?

You allow your mind to be filled with God’s Spirit──

“ … seek those things which are above, where Christ is, … 2) set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.” – Colossians 3:1, 2.

A spiritually mature begotten child of God should use self-discipline and set his heart on spiritual things. If a TEMPTATION enters your mind, OPEN UP GOD’S LIVING WORD── refocus your mind on a spiritual subject. Pray over it── and ask God the Father and our Lord Jesus to help you. You will begin to rapidly win the victory over temptation and sin! □
